Full-Spectrum Veterinary Care for Many Species
The Mountain Hospital for Animals is a rare entity in modern veterinary medicine: a small practice that genuinely cares for a wide range of animals people bring home. Dogs and cats are our most common patients — but on any given day we're also treating birds, reptiles, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, backyard chickens, and the occasional native wildlife case.
Our approach is conservative and tailored to the individual animal and its owner. We are grounded by 3.5 decades of practice on Lookout Mountain — we would rather take an extra 10 minutes to talk through your animal's history than rush you out the door. In-house bloodwork, urinalysis, parasitology, and other diagnostics to answer the questions a physical exam alone can't.

Soft-tissue and orthopedic surgical procedures performed on site, with anesthesia protocols matched to the species and attentive monitoring throughout.

As animals age, the conversation shifts to comfort, mobility, quality of life. We focus on what actually improves their day, across species.

Boarding for existing patients in a quiet, supervised setting — useful when your pet has medical needs that require oversight while you're away.
What to Expect
What to Expect at Your First Veterinary Visit
Before your first appointment, we'll ask you to complete our New Patient Form — owner contact details, your animal's basic info, prior vet records, and any current concerns. Sending it ahead means we can review everything before you arrive.
The visit itself starts with a conversation — what you've been seeing at home, any changes in eating, drinking, energy, or behavior. From there we'll do a hands-on exam, talk through what we find, and agree on a plan together. No upsells, no pressure.
If your animal has been seen elsewhere before, we'll request records on your behalf so nothing important falls through the cracks. For exotic species, photos of your enclosure setup are useful — much of what affects an animal's health is the environment they live in.

What species do you actually treat?
We're a full-spectrum practice. Most visits are dogs and cats, but we also see birds (including chickens and ducks), reptiles, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, other small mammals, amphibians, and the occasional Appalachian wildlife case. How often should my pet see a veterinarian?
Most healthy adult animals do well with one wellness exam a year. Young animals need more frequent visits during their first months. Seniors typically benefit from twice-yearly exams so we can catch age-related changes early.
Do you accept new patients?
Yes — across every species we see. Please complete our New Patient Form before your first visit so we have your animal's basics in front of us when you arrive.
What should I bring to my pet's first appointment?
Any prior medical records, a current list of medications and supplements, your completed New Patient Form, and recent lab work or imaging if you have it. If your pet does better with a familiar toy, blanket, or treat on hand, bring that too. For exotic species, photos of the enclosure setup help us spot husbandry issues fast.
Do you handle surgery and dental procedures here?
We perform a range of routine surgical and dental procedures on site, with anesthesia protocols matched to the species. For specialized cases that need a referral — some orthopedic surgery, advanced imaging, oncology, and similar — we'll walk you through the options and help coordinate care with the right specialist.
